How to get an NHS referral in Scotland

1

Book a GP appointment

Describe your concerns and request a referral to your NHS Board's neurodevelopmental or adult mental health service (for adults) or CAMHS (for children and young people under 18).

2

Ask to be added to the waiting list immediately

Ensure the referral is sent promptly. Ask for written confirmation that the referral has been made and the date. You may need to follow up if you do not hear anything within 4–6 weeks.

3

Request regular wait-time updates

You are entitled to ask your NHS Board for your current position on the waiting list. Some boards have a portal; others require a phone call to the admin team.

4

Consider a parallel private assessment

Many patients in Scotland join the NHS waiting list and book a private assessment at the same time. If you are seen privately first, inform your NHS Board so they can remove you from the list.

Private assessment in Scotland

Private neurodevelopmental assessment services operate in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and several online providers accept patients from anywhere in Scotland. Private providers in Scotland are regulated by Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) — look for HIS registration when choosing a clinic.

A private ADHD assessment typically costs £450–£1,400. An autism assessment costs £1,495–£2,500. Most private providers do not require a GP referral letter, though it is good practice to inform your GP.

After a private diagnosis in Scotland, you may request that your NHS GP prescribes medication under a shared care arrangement — though not all Scottish GP practices accept shared care from private providers. It is worth checking your practice's position before booking.
